Founded in 1561, Recife is the biggest urban cluster in the northeast region and Brazil’s oldest state capital. It is the place of cutting edge projects such as the Digital Port, which houses around one hundred enterprises that make the city one of the country’s main information technology hubs. In addition, the city is a place of intense and original cultural production, a mix of modern and traditional aspects.

With almost 1.5 million inhabitants, the city is characterised by a happy combination of beaches, an average temperature of 25 degrees Celsius, and culture and history that attract millions of tourists.

São Pedro Cultural Complex
The centre is inscribed in the World Heritage List and draws attention because of its 18th century architecture, which has preserved its original characteristics, like the old house. Address: Bairro de São José, Centro do Recife.

Recife Antigo (Recife’s Old City Centre)
The city’s historic centre houses some of its relics. Here, the Pilar Church, as well as the Mother of God Church and Convent stand out, as well as the Rua do Apolo Theatre, Brum Station and Bum Fort. The old neighbourhood is also home to bars, restaurants, nightclubs, handcraft fares, as well as the city’s ground zero. Furthermore, Recife is home to the first synagogue of the Americas, Kahal Zur Israel, built in 1637, when Jewish people came over from Amsterdam to live in the city.

Saint Benedict’s Basilica and Monastery
The church has the richest sacristy in Olinda, gold plated. The whole complex takes us back to the 16th century, following the baroque style.
