Video: Transcarioca in Rio de Janeiro, a construction site working on full steam

The expressway will have 45 stations

On a region that is far off from Barra da Tijuca, surrounded by a green area, a “factory” is working on full steam. It’s there that comes into being every square meter of the new Transcarioca, the new 39km expressway that will cross the Barra da Tijuca district, on the West Zone of Rio de Janeiro, and reach the Penha district, on the North Zone. At the site, they manufacture from pre-made pieces to viaduct beams, and also have facilities for carpentry, metalworking and concrete plants.

“These are pieces that we use a lot and, this way, we can make them with the same mold, with great quality and uniformity, according to the necessity of use on the expressway. You have a much better quality control, because the product is in your hands”, explains the chief engineer of construction, Eduardo Fagundes.

To give an idea of the flow of production, in the site were manufactured around 1 thousand cubic meters of concrete used in the building of the Alvorada Tunnel, in Barra da Tijuca – only one of the structures that make up the 39 kilometers of the Transcarioca. With the amount of concrete used in the Tunnel, it would be possible to make a 10-story building.

The expressway will have 45 stations between the Cebolão, on the junction of the avenues Américas and Ayrton Senna, in Barra da Tijuca, and the Tom Jobim/Galeão International Airport. The BRT will go over the Tunnel and through Penha, where a new viaduct is also being built.
