The 2014 FIFA World Cup almost finished this Sunday (22.06) for the world's best player. In a thrilling match at the Amazonia Arena, Portugal drew 2-2 with the United States and have kept their hopes of qualifying for the next round alive.
The result carries a bitter taste for the Americans. After going behind the score line, the USA came back from behind and were securing early qualification for the round of 16. However, in the last minute of the game, Portugal equalised with Cristiano Ronaldo playing a decisive role.
Group G’s last match will be held next Thursday (26.06). Portugal faces Ghana at 01:00pm in Brasilia needing to win in order to have a chance of going through. In addition, they need Germany to beat the United States in the Pernambuco Arena in Recife. The matches will be played at the same time.
The match between the Portuguese and the Americans started very balanced. But a mistake by the American defence changed things in the 4th minute. Cameron tried to clear and the ball fell to Nani in front of Howard. The forward waited for the keeper to fall to one side and opened the score for Portugal.
The United States equalised in the 64th minute with a great effort from outside of the box. After a corner, the Portuguese defence cleared and the ball fell to Jones, who pulled it to the right and released a powerful shot into the corner of goal.
The United States then took the lead in the 81st minute. Bradley got on the end of a cross and tried to put a shot in, the ball deflected off the defence and fell to Zusi. He crossed it into the middle and Dempsey bellied it into goal.
The defeat would mean an early exit for Cristiano Ronaldo’s team. However, Portugal equalised in the last minute of the match. Ronaldo put in a precise cross for Varela, who headed into the net and keeps Portugal’s hopes of going through to the World Cup knockout stage alive.
