Several chances and high level football. This Saturday (14.06), Italy and England took part in the one of the best games of the tournament so far. In approximately 30 degree heat in Manaus, the Azzurra came out the winner at the first World Cup match played at the Amazonia Arena: 2-1, with Marchisio and Balotelli getting on the scoresheet. Sturridge pulled one back for the 1966 winners.
With the result, Costa Rica, who beat Uruguay 3-1 at the Castelão leads Group D, one of the tournament’s most difficult. Italy is second, followed by England. Uruguay however is in the last position.
Italy opened the score in the 34th minute, after great play by Pirlo. The midfielder dummied over a pass, leaving the ball for Marchisio’s shot. Free at the edge of the box, the player released a powerful shot into the right corner of Hart's goal.
The English drew level two minutes later, when Rooney got onto the end of a pass and crossed for Sturridge. The forward released a shot and scored. In the second half it was time for Balotelli to shine: in the 49th minute, the striker got his head to the end of cross put in by Candreva, scoring the winning goal.
Attempting to recover, Uruguay and England face each other in the group's next match on Thursday (19.06) at the Corinthians Arena, in São Paulo. Italy and Costa Rica play on Friday (20.06), at the Pernambuco Arena in Recife.
