Spain took the lead, but was steam rolled as Robben and Van Persie brought it up a level

Everyone expected Holland and Spain to be a good match. It was a replay of the South Africa World Cup final. However, with an unstoppable performance by forwards Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben, the Dutch thumped Spain 5-1 at the Fonte Nova Arena in Salvador on Friday (13.06).

Funnily enough Spain scored the first goal of the match. In the 25th minute, Diego Costa got the ball in the area, cut past Vrij and fell. Xabi Alonso took the penalty. David Silva could have added to the scoresheet near the end of the first half, but keeper Cillessen deflected his shot.

The Dutch come back started in the 43rd minute, with a great effort by Van Persie, who got his head onto the end of a Blind cross from midfield and chipped the ball over Casillas. Robben put Holland in the lead in the 52nd minute. In the 59th minute, Van Persie crashed into Casillas and De Vrij scored a controversial goal, extending the Dutch’s lead.

Van Persie scored once more, making the most of a mistake by Casillas, who misjudged a back pass in the 71st minute. Robben got on the scoresheet again to end the rout. He sprinted from the halfway line, beating Spain's defenders and Casillas to score Holland's fifth.

Spain play Chile in Rio de Janeiro on 19 June. On the same day, the Dutch face Australia in Porto Alegre at 01:00pm.
