According to the 2014 World Cup match schedule announced by FIFA, Cuiabá will host four matches. The Pantanal Arena in the capital of Mato Grosso state will host four group stage matches, for Groups B, C, F and H. The matches will be held on the 13th of June (Friday), 17th of June (Tuesday), 21st of June (Saturday) and 24th of June (Tuesday). The last match will include the top seeded team in Group C.

As a result of the refurbishment and modernisation works of the José Fragelli Stadium, the Pantanal Arena will be able to house 43,600 fans comfortably. The investment made will be in the order of 597 million reais (approximately US$ 344 million), funded by the state and a private initiative consortium.

The project has provided for a multi-use space that will be managed by companies. The venue will have two training centres, as well as restaurants, hotels, car parks, lakes, woods and a track for walking. After the World Cup, the venue will be able to be used as a conventions centre or for holding trade shows and fairs.

One of the venues’ main characteristics is its environmental focus. For example, trucks and other vehicles and equipment that leave the construction site are washed so as to not dirty the streets. Where the washing takes place the water is decanted and reused. Even paint and varnishes used follow a number of requirements, such as not emitting toxic particles that may harm one’s health.
