Ecuadorian striker Valencia scores twice and joins World Cup top scorers

Ecuador beat Honduras with two goals by striker Enner Valencia on a cold Friday night (20 June) at the Baixada Arena in Curitiba, with the Colombians coming from behind to beat Honduras 2-1 after Carlos Costly opened the score sheet. The fans attending the Curitiba stadium today were particularly happy to see the score sheet change after a goalless debut in the city (Iran vs. Nigeria on 16 June).

Valencia reached his third goal in the World Cup and is now one the top scorers alongside Karim Benzema (France), Thomas Müller (Germany) and Robin Van Persie and Arjen Robben (Netherlands).

The victory leaves Ecuadorians in second place in Group E with three points, behind leader France (who won both its matches). Switzerland also has three points, but after being routed by France this Friday the Swiss have a negative-two goal difference, while Ecuador is one goal in the black. Despite not having scored any points so far, Honduras still harbors some remote hope of qualifying for the round of sixteen.

The decisive matches for the Group will be played at 5 PM (Brasília time) on 25 June. Honduras and Switzerland face off in the Amazon Arena in Manaus (4 PM local time) while Ecuador has France as its next opponent at the Maracanã stadium in Rio.
