Attendance of 57,698 is record-breaking for Mineirão after renovation

Whoever expected a rout was disappointed. Argentina faced hard opposition throughout the match before beating Iran by 1-0 this Saturday afternoon (21 June) in the Mineirão stadium, in Belo Horizonte. Messi scored the only goal of the match at injury time on the second half. He received the ball at the right flank, sidestepped the defense to the left and fired a bombshell from outside the box right into Haghighi's opposing corner.

With the win, Argentina now leads Group F with six points while Iran remains with one. The final confrontations of the Group both happen on June 25: Nigeria battles Argentina in Porto Alegre and Iran faces Bosnia in Salvador, both also at 1 PM.

On the support side, while South Americans feeling at home in this World Cup is nothing new, Argentina had an even clearer cut for this match: their Training Base Camp is in the metropolitan region of Belo Horizonte. The stadium was packed full with Argentine fans, even including a special reinforcement: Diego Armando Maradona was in attendance. The 57,698 fans have broken the attendance record of the new stadium.
